Certificate of Appropriateness

Case Study:
A proposed new canopy at 610 West End

Things change!

Even the staunchest of preservationists knows that in vibrant communities, changes in the built environment are inevitable.

Landmarks are not frozen in time, and they depend up our constant stewardship for appropriate and sensitive maintenance and growth.

When owners of landmark buildings wish to make changes, they need to apply for what's called a Certificate of Appropriateness (C of A). LW's C of A Committee works with building owners and their architects to advise on design and protect the integrity of our constantly evolving neighborhood.

C of A In Action
The Evanston, 610 West End Ave.
The Evanston commissioned
Francoise Bollack Architects to design a contemporary metal-and-glass entrance canopy inspired by the geometry of George and Edward Blum, original architects of this and many other Upper West Side apartment buildings.
