Dear Friend of LANDMARK WEST!:

“Preservation is the ultimate in recycling,” according to America’s leading expert on historic preservation, economics and sustainability, Donovan Rypkema.  Based on LW’s 25 years of first-hand experience balancing all three of these goals in one of the world’s most intense urban environments, we couldn’t agree more!

LW! is the only grassroots organization dedicated to protecting the special character and identity of Manhattan’s Upper West Side. The results of our constant vigilance and nimble responsiveness are evident in every preserved stoop, cornice, block, and streetscape between 59th and 110th Streets, Riverside Park to Central Park.

LW! is also probably the only nonprofit advocacy group so economical as to reuse extra copies of past appeal letters in a current fundraising campaign!  Nothing—we mean nothing—goes to waste here, especially these days when spirits are willing but wallets are weak.  These missives from our past prove that, even as we celebrate significant victories (and we’ve had many—the West Side now claims close to 2,700 landmark buildings up from only 337 in 1985), we face perennial challenges.
