The Villard Houses, a McKim, Mead & White landmarked building – now home to Trunk Club’s  beautifully renovated clubhouse – is the setting for a Gilded Age-inspired program of excess and obsession. Paula Uruburu, real-life history detective, spins the tale of architect Stanford White’s talents, loves, and tragic end. A final treat – a guided tour of the grand, historic space.

Stanford White was Manhattan’s premiere architect and arbiter of taste, equally at home with the bohemians of Broadway and Mrs. Astor’s 400. The creator of splendid buildings across Manhattan, White pursued beauty at any cost.

Evelyn Nesbit was, at sweet sixteen, the glittering “It” girl of Gotham with a face to die for – literally. Their brief but scandalous affair would ultimately lead to White’s murder in 1906 by her insanely jealous millionaire husband, Harry Thaw. The media frenzy and sensational “Trial of the Century” that followed soon exposed the dark side of love and the beginning of America’s growing obsession with money, madness, and celebrity.

Paula Uruburu is a professor of English and film studies at Hofstra University. An expert on Evelyn Nesbit and the Gilded Age, she has appeared on A&E’s Biography, PBS’s History Detectives and the series The American Experience; she has also been a consultant for the History Channel and the Smithsonian Channel.
