From the moment the grand courtyard gates opened, the atmosphere literally sizzled with excitement. Our hosts, Drs. Bruce Barnes and Joseph Cunningham, offered an intimate circle of LW! friends a warm welcome into their home and treated us all to an elegant feast of food, drink and insights into their peerless collection of Early Modern American design and decorative arts. They even arranged for the moon to rise on cue, perfectly framed in their Frank Lloyd Wright windows!
As the light faded over Central Park, the moment was ripe for reflection on all of the reasons we love the Upper West Side. Indeed, LW! and The Dakota (born 100 years apart—LW! in 1985, The Dakota in 1884) have a lot in common. We’re both committed to careful stewardship of our neighborhood’s architectural gems. And we know from experience that preserving these treasures requires knowledge, dedicated leadership and constant vigilance. That’s why LW! has stuck to its guns for nearly 25 years, and why we plan to stick around for many years to come.
The good news is that Tuesday’s party raised a goodly sum to help sustain our advocacy. And there’s no bad news. Just lots of work ahead to keep the Upper West Side the place we all fell in love with.

"Bruce Barnes and Joseph Cunningham live amidst what many consider a peerless collection of American Arts and Crafts and Prairie Movement decorative art (1890-1920) comprising more than 300 pieces by such designers as Greene & Greene, Charles Rohlfs, Roycroft, Gustav Stickley, Frank Lloyd Wright, Grueby, Newcomb, George Ohr and Teco." |
