Manhattan Avenue

Manhattan Avenue
where the handsome rows arose
as the L came through
Manhattan Avenue
where the past was something to revere
and the new machine could take us there

by the wheel on the rail
to a distant place
or an age long ago
at the turn of the lathe

they don’t make places like that anymore
better hold fast, its worth fighting for

Manhattan Avenue
just South of The Curve
when West Side was new
Manhattan Avenue
displayed such  fine detail
not far from the Bloomingdale

the vision to recall
an age bygone
now’s it ready to re-take
a place of its own

they don’t make places like that anymore
better hold fast, its worth fighting for
