Instagram post 2139425645435035410_529955955 Even with a sidewalk shed, the #newyorkcancerhospital (later the #towersnursinghome) at 455 CPW is a sight to behold.

Opening in 1887 as the New York Cancer Hospital, it was the first of its kind solely dedicated to cancer treatment. Architect Charles Coolidge Haight designed the French Renaissance style hospital to facilitate the most progressive cancer treatment methods of the day. The patient wards were located in the five turret (circular) spaces because it was believed that germs thrived in corners.

The Towers Nursing Home moved into the facility in 1956, closing in 1974. Crumbling, and with a negative reputation, the building seemed destined to meet the bulldozer. But preservationists recognized its architectural and historic significance and successfully lobbied the city for landmark status in 1976. Yay! It remained somewhat blighted until the early 2000's when the interior was reconfigured into 17 units.

Today we use the building as part of our #kpf program, and particularly #shapedetectives where we work with local kindergarten classes to find shapes in our built and natural environment.

Designed by architect John E Scharsmith in the Beaux-Arts style it features exuberant French-inspired classical and Beaux-Arts detailing.

Whilst currently undergoing restoration the entry is still looking glorious!
