Upstairs: The Artists & Studios of the Hotel des Artistes
January 28 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Artist-writer Robert Hudovernik, who spent years researching the famed Hotel des Artistes at One West 67th Street, shares some of the hundreds of archival photos he unearthed for his just-released book Manhattan’s Hotel des Artistes: America’s Paris on West 67th Street and treats us to untold stories of its residents and guests. Marvel at the wonders of the early Des Artistes ballroom extravaganzas, the towering walls of north light of the portrait painters’ studios, the famous tiled pool with LeRoy Neiman murals, and the luxurious rooftop triplex of art collectors Aaron & Nettie Naumburg. See the long-lost mural sketches of beloved Art Student’s League teacher Frank Vincent DuMond, hear accounts of Valentino’s ghost and glorified Ziegfeld girls, and share a table in the iconic café where America’s great painters, sculptors, writers, illustrators, actors, and dancers cavorted and created.
